JAYDEN

God won’t abandon you in the rough waters.

These words have been echoing in my mind since I had my quiet time this morning. I want to tell Teeyana and I want her to believe them too.

Placing my Bible on my bed, I pick up my phone from my bedside table and open my text messages, clicking on her name and then pausing.

Lord, should I text her?

She hasn’t updated me since I spoke to her yesterday, and I’ve been thinking about a million possible things that could have happened.

If she hasn’t messaged me, then perhaps I should leave her alone?

Teeyana only ever said good things about her grandma, so I can only imagine what she’s going through now. I don’t want her ending up in the dark tunnel of dejection I was in. It’s a hard tunnel to get out of, and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Pressing my phone against my ear, I tap my fingers on my thigh as it rings, biting my lower lip in anticipation.

“Hello?” Teeyana’s soft voice comes through from the other end of the line.

“Hey, Tee?” I clear my throat. “I’m sorry if this is a bad time. I wanted to find out how you’re doing. Is everything okay?” I ask, my voice coming out more shaky than I would have wanted.

She hesitates before replying, “Yeah, I’m alright…I guess.”

“Are you at the hospital now?”

“Yeah, I came in this morning with my mom and Aunt Bella. Dad is at home with Danny, and Grandpa is on his way to the hospital.”

I swing my legs from my bed so my feet touch the floor. “Okay. So what are you doing now?”

“Well, the hospital has a pond and I’ve been sitting next to it for the last half hour, staring into the water, and wishing I had a reset button for my life. I saw a man sitting here yesterday, and he looked rather peaceful, so I thought I’d try it out for myself.”

“And…is it peaceful?” I ask.

“Well,” she sighs, “it’s a helpful distraction for now.”

”Okay then. And your grandma? How is she doing today?” I ask.

“Grandma is still in a coma.” She sighs, but I can tell that sigh is only a mask to hide her true feelings. “We’re waiting for the results of the MRI scan to see if there are any signs of hope.” She adds.

“Okay, but how are you feeling—really?” I emphasise, hoping she’ll take off the mask and talk to me.

“Do you want me to be honest or should I sugar-coat it so I don’t have to bore you with the details?” she asks.

“I’m all about honesty, Tee. Trust me, if I find you boring, you would know.” I try to lighten up the mood, but when she doesn’t respond, I get the cue that this is not the right time. “Please, you can talk to me if you want to. I’m here for you.”

She lets out another deep sigh before replying. “I’m scared, Jay. Grandma suffered a serious head injury from that accident.
